Reading

‘Reading is a passport to thousands of adventures’ – Mary Pope Osborne

Expectations:

  • Choose between the Big Cat Collins banded book and the Shared reader text and read at least four times a week.
  • Reading diary to be signed by an adult every time your child reads.
  • The Sound Cards, Big Cat Collins books, Shared Readers and reading diaries need to be brought into school every day.
  •  Although we appreciate care will be taken to look after these books, there will be a small charge of to replace any lost books.

Reading Challenge and Reading Raffle

 
   

Reception and Key stage 1 have their own 'Reading Challenge' in each classroom which children move through each time they read at home. Reward or Prizes will be given to those who reach the end of the Reading Challenge.

Key stage 2 children have the opportunity to win prizes during the weekly 'Reading Raffle'.

Library Books

 
   

Your child will select a library book weekly which they will bring home to enjoy.  Although we appreciate care will be taken to look after these books, there will be a small charge of £3 to replace any lost books.

Home Reading 

A Big Cat Collins colour- banded book will be sent home each night. This book will match your child’s reading ability. These books will be changed once a week. The Big Cat Collins books have a picture of a lion and a coloured band on the back and front of the book.

A Shared Reader text will also be sent home each week. This is a text that will be read at school during reading lessons and the children can read this to you at home. A Shared Reader text will have the word ‘Shared Reader’ across the top and the specific phonics sounds the children will focus on when reading that text.
